Drive Electric Earth Month 2026

It's that time of year again!

 
Coinciding with Earth Day (an event held on April 22 every year since 1970), Drive Electric Earth Day was started in 2019, as a spring event to accompany the long-running fall event by the same organizers, National Drive Electric Week. Both events have now expanded to a month, to allow even more events and give event organizers more scheduling freedom. Now that April is here, it's time for a rundown of the Drive Electric Earth Month events that are happening on or near Route 66 this year.

Like last year at the Fun Run, a great variety of EVs will be on display at DEEM events this year.
 


South Whittier Library

The LA County ISD is hosting the South Whittier Library Resource Fair with 10 partner organizations, featuring EVs on display, door prizes and refreshments.

Allegiant Stadium

All-In Clark County's Community EV Ride & Drive and Recycling Event will take place outside Allegiant Stadium, featuring EV information and test drives, booths and activities, food trucks, and music. This is a long distance from Route 66 but I'm including this because Electric Route 66 will be there helping out with the Nevada EVA, and both of our vehicles will be on display along with over 30 more EVs registered. We hope to see you there!

University of Illinois Chicago

Join the E-Mobility Fellows at the University of Illinois for this on-campus event, to feature electric vehicles and other electric mobility technologies. It will give students, faculty, and staff the opportunity to see EVs up close and learn more about how electric mobility is transforming transportation.

LA County Sanitation Districts is the host for the Whittier Earth Day & EV Celebration, featuring EVs from bikes to cars and in between, live music, arts & crafts, and over 50 green exhibitors.

Palisades Earth Day & Veg Fest will feature vendors, activities and demonstrations along with EV information.

Southwestern Illinois College

Southwestern Illinois College has been hosting Drive Electric events for 7 years now, and hopes that this year will be their biggest ever.

This EV car show will take place at Ravinia during the city of Highland Park's annual Arbor Day Fest. Over a dozen EVs are already registered for display.

New Mexico's largest electric utility PNM is hosting a Clean Car Concourse at their third annual Earth Day Festival, featuring EV dealers, owners, and information, and the opportunity to test drive EVs.

Hualapai Cultural Center

Drive Electric Arizona is hosting the Route 66 Centennial EV Showcase to coincide with the Arizona Route 66 Fun Run, as it passes through Peach Springs in its 37th year. There will also be a big EV contingent at the Fun Run's absolutely massive car show in Kingman later that afternoon, and Electric Route 66 will be there! Come see us!
 
 
That wraps up the Drive Electric Earth Month events near Route 66 this year. If you can't make it to one of these, we encourage you to take a look at the DEEM web site and see if there is another event going on near you. DEEM is presented by the Electric Vehicle Association, Plug In America, Sierra Club, Drive Electric USA, and EVHybridNoire. After a very lengthy hiatus, the Electric Route 66 Dashcam is back with our longest video ever!   Endee, New Mexico, 2022 Back in 2022, we traveled Route 66 westbound from Glenrio at the Texas/New Mexico border, through Endee, NM and into San Jon, NM. Two years ago, the dispensary at Glenrio had not yet been built, and the 1931 wooden bridge west of Endee was still open, with construction underway on a new bridge next to it. Then about 7 months later in 2023, a flash flood destroyed the almost-complete new bridge and damaged the old one as well, leading to its closure.     Glenrio, Texas, 2023   Recently, a new path next to the old bridge has been graded and opened so that drivers can travel this section of Route 66 as a through route once again. The bridge bypass goes down into the wash, making it passable but only during good weather. Road Closure info: Route 66 in California

As many Route 66 travelers will know, there has been a long-term closure of a section of Route 66 in the eastern Mojave Desert in California. Due to the abundance of questions about this area on Route 66 Facebook groups, I decided to write up a summary of what is signed for travelers on the affected roads. Our October trip to the Road Runner's Retreat provided the opportunity to photograph all of the road signs that have been placed to deter travelers from the closed area. Two segments of Route 66 between Needles and Amboy have been closed for a couple of years, and there is no timetable for reopening. Many bridges were washed out in flood conditions and San Bernardino County has not finished repairing them all, as they are an enormous county without a lot of funds. I'm coming in a little late with this post! National Drive Electric Week is currently underway and there are a number of events taking place along Route 66 this year, as in previous years. My apologies to Chicago and to Tulsa, Oklahoma for not getting this post done before events there, which happened on September 21!
