Arizona Route 66 Fun Run 2024

After a slow early spring for Electric Route 66, the 2024 travel season is now upon us and a major event for Route 66 is coming this weekend!

The 35th Annual Route 66 Fun Run is happening May 3-5 and Electric Route 66 will be there as usual, along with a large expected contingent of other EV drivers from Arizona and elsewhere. Along with 800+ registrants of all vehicle types for this two day cruise and car show, the EV portion of festivities this year will be headed up by Drive Electric Arizona. Electric Route 66 will be representing the Route 66 EVA with our main car, The Blue Spirit.

This fundraiser for the Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona has grown immense over the decades, and after shuttering for two years due to covid it has come back strong. The town of Seligman fills up with attendees beginning on Friday, and the car cruise begins there Saturday morning. On Saturday afternoon as cars arrive in Kingman, the downtown streets are closed to traffic and a massive car show fills several blocks. This year, EVs will once again have their own section at the Powerhouse Visitor Center, where the Historic Electric Vehicle Foundation has numerous EVs on display year-round at their Route 66 EV Museum.

On Sunday, following an awards presentation, the cruise continues from Kingman through Oatman to the finish line, car show and BBQ at Golden Shores/Topock. Both days comprise a great event with literally hundreds of classic cars and many cool newer cars as well, including a growing group of EV drivers.

Similar to last year, the EV folks will have our own get together and a few special awards to give out on Saturday evening, separate from the main Fun Run awards on Sunday morning. If you want to join us for the Fun Run, whether you have an EV or not, you can register with the Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona on their site. The registration fee goes to support the Association and their efforts at Route 66 preservation and promotion in Arizona. They always have a great goodie bag for registrants including sponsor gifts and a custom, numbered license plate! If you have an EV specifically and would like to join us at the Powerhouse display and get together, please register using the PARTICIPATE link at this Drive Electric Week event. This second registration is free.

Road Closure info: Route 66 in California

As many Route 66 travelers will know, there has been a long-term closure of a section of Route 66 in the eastern Mojave Desert in California. Due to the abundance of questions about this area on Route 66 Facebook groups, I decided to write up a summary of what is signed for travelers on the affected roads. Our October trip to the Road Runner's Retreat provided the opportunity to photograph all of the road signs that have been placed to deter travelers from the closed area. Two segments of Route 66 between Needles and Amboy have been closed for a couple of years, and there is no timetable for reopening. Many bridges were washed out in flood conditions and San Bernardino County has not finished repairing them all, as they are an enormous county without a lot of funds. Join us at DEED and the Fun Run in April and May

It's been pretty quiet here at Electric Route 66, but coming up soon are two (count 'em!) events that will likely be just the beginning of a very busy road-tripping season. If you are in the vicinity of Kingman, Arizona, we'd love to see there!     Drive Electric Earth Day On April 29, Kingman will be hosting their second Drive Electric Earth Day event at the Powerhouse Visitor Center. Hosted by the Historic Electric Vehicle Foundation , EV owners will bring their cars for display, and to answer questions from the public about owning and driving electric. It looks like it will be a small gathering this year, but the Powerhouse is a busy place: in addition to the Arizona Route 66 Museum, visitor information and gift shops, the Route 66 EV Museum will be open to all for free.   The Powerhouse Visitor Center is Kingman's biggest Route 66 attraction. Utah back roads weekend

In an effort to get out of the Vegas heat once more, we took another short weekend trip at the end of August. We did our best to avoid the interstate and did a short loop around the back roads of southwestern Utah. I hope you enjoy our photos of some of the sights. Amazing views abound in southwest Utah Day 1: Las Vegas to Cedar City Our two-lane route on Day 1: from I-15 exit 112 to Cedar City   For the first 75 miles of our journey from home in Las Vegas, using Interstate 15 is unavoidable as there is no other through road. We left home in The Blue Spirit with a full charge, which showed as 284 miles on our car. (This is just an estimate. I'm working on resetting the estimate back closer to the car's original EPA range of 310 miles, but this process of recalibration can take a long time in a Model 3.)
